Srisailam Dam – The Giant That Turns River Water Into Power
Why Srisailam Dam remains a giant of water and hydroelectric power
Deep in the Nallamala Hills, the mighty Krishna River meets one of India’s most remarkable engineering projects — Srisailam Dam.
But what makes Srisailam Dam so important?
Why Was Srisailam Dam Built?
Srisailam Dam was built mainly to store Krishna River water and generate hydroelectric power. Its reservoir is enormous, with a gross storage capacity of about 215.8 TMC.
What Makes It Special?
The dam is around 512 metres long and 143 metres high. Its hydropower stations on the right and left banks have a combined installed capacity of 1,670 MW.
That means Srisailam is not simply a huge concrete structure. Water stored behind the dam becomes electricity when it passes through turbines.
The Interesting Fact
Srisailam is surrounded by dramatic hills and is also close to the famous Srisailam temple, making the area a fascinating combination of engineering, nature and spirituality.
Why Is Srisailam Dam Famous?
Because it shows how a river can serve several purposes at once — water storage, electricity generation and regional water management.
Srisailam Dam is where the power of a river meets the power of engineering.
